Deal-sourcing comparison

Analysts vs AI research agents

Which research tasks benefit from repeatable collection, and which require human interpretation, judgement and relationships?

Qualitative assessments by Docket · No universal winner

Last reviewed · report an error

The comparison should concern a research workflow, not a contest between a person and a model writing company summaries. Analysts can design questions, interpret ambiguous businesses and carry relationship context. Agents can apply a defined protocol repeatedly, retaining support for review. Both can make mistakes, and neither should convert unsupported assumptions into accepted screening facts.

A useful division of work separates question design, identity resolution, collection, review and the decision about what to do next. The evidence standard should remain stable when the executor changes. Compare accepted answers and unresolved cases, not the fluency or length of the resulting narrative.

What the options do

Analyst-led research

An analyst can notice that the mandate’s language fails to capture an important operating distinction and revise the question with the team. Human attention also helps with unusual records and the context of a relationship. Those strengths require time and good documentation. An experienced researcher’s confidence is not a replacement for a retained passage or a clear account of uncertainty.

AI agent research

Agents apply typed questions across company records and can retain the source material used to answer them. A separate review pass can strike unsupported answers and expose gaps. The workflow still needs good questions, identity checks and human oversight. Automated repetition can amplify a bad criterion as readily as it can extend a good research protocol.

When to choose each

Analyst-led research

Choose analyst attention for ambiguous source interpretation, evolving criteria and situations where relationship context affects the next step. Give analysts explicit standards and a way to escalate contradictions. Avoid assigning every routine field to a senior researcher when the same protocol can be executed and reviewed more consistently through a structured workflow.

AI agent research

Choose agents for repeated collection against stable questions where the relevant evidence is available and outputs can be reviewed. Start with a bounded set that includes difficult records, not only clean websites. Inspect source relevance, entity matching and unresolved answers before expanding. Keep acquisition decisions, contact approval and sensitive relationship interpretation with the client and responsible people.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing an unreviewed model summary with careful analyst research. Give both workflows the same questions, sources policy and acceptance standard.
  • Assuming a quotation makes an answer correct. The passage may be from the wrong entity or may not support the claimed conclusion.
  • Removing people from question design and exception review because collection is automated. A weakly specified question can generate consistent but useless answers across the whole population.

What the decision depends on

It depends on ambiguity and repetition. Use people to define the research standard, handle context and judge next steps; use agents where a specified collection and review process can be repeated. Docket combines Triage, Scout and Audit, with self-serve operation or managed analyst delivery. Audit works with fetch tools denied, testing retained material rather than quietly replacing weak evidence. The client remains responsible for investment and relationship decisions.

How to test the choice

Write down the current constraint before choosing a workflow: candidate coverage, evidence quality, access or the capacity to handle conversations. Compare alternatives against the same mandate and record the work needed to reach the same stage. A larger file, a delivered message and a held owner discussion are different outputs. Treat missing evidence and excluded records as part of the assessment rather than hiding them behind activity totals.

Start with a bounded review and examine the actual records. Ask which claims changed the decision, which questions stayed open and who must act next. Expand only when the handoff is workable. These comparisons are Docket’s qualitative assessments of operating methods, not performance benchmarks, promises of transactions or recommendations to acquire a business.

Discuss the research work your team needs or inspect the live demo before choosing a delivery approach.

Where to check this

Compare analysts and agents the way you would compare two analysts: on frozen cases with known answers, scored by field. The literature on hallucination, attribution and factual precision tells you what to measure, and inter-rater reliability tells you whether two reviewers agree with each other.
