Describe the mandate.
One channel for research enquiries, platform walkthroughs, and data-handling questions.

A useful first note
You do not need a finished investment thesis or a complete target list to make contact. Describe the mandate as it stands. Separate firm requirements from preferences and questions you still want to explore. That distinction helps us turn the brief into research that can stop for the right reasons.
Open a pre-structured enquiry with the fields below, or write the same information in your own format. Leave any field open when it is undecided; an honest blank is more useful than a guess. Revenue and EBITDA bands should be identified as screening preferences; we will discuss which parts can be supported by public evidence.
- Firm
- The fund or platform doing the sourcing, and the team within it. A good answer: a lower-middle-market buyout fund, origination team.
- Mandate / sectors
- Say what the business does, not only its industry label. A good answer: commercial HVAC service contractors with recurring maintenance agreements, not “industrials”.
- Geography
- The boundary you would actually act within, and whether it means headquarters or any operating site. A good answer: Ontario and Quebec, headquartered there.
- Size band (revenue or EBITDA)
- A range, marked as a screening preference. A good answer: $3M to $10M EBITDA, or $15M to $60M revenue where EBITDA is not public.
- Target list
- Bring one / build one
- Criteria that matter most
- Separate must-haves that should stop research from preferences that only rank. A good answer: must be independently owned; prefer an owner past 60 with no named successor.
- Outreach wanted
- None / email / LinkedIn / phone
- Delivery
- Self-serve / managed
- Timeline
- When you want the first records and when a shortlist is needed. A good answer: first ten this month, shortlist before the next investment committee.
For an existing list, company names and website addresses help distinguish the intended businesses from namesakes. Before sending a non-public list, tell us what confidentiality arrangements you require. For a list we build, explain the business activities and geographic boundaries rather than relying only on an industry label.

What happens next
- We reply to the brief. We identify the research question, the proposed starting list, and any constraints that need resolving. If a requested field is unlikely to be public, that becomes part of scoping.
- A scoping call defines the work. We discuss geography, exclusions, evidence requirements, delivery mode, and whether outreach is wanted. The conversation also establishes what your team wants to review before research expands.
- Your criteria become agent questions. We draft typed questions with fixed answer lists and distinguish disqualifiers from scoring preferences. Your team reviews the meaning of the questions before they shape the shortlist.
- The first ten targets come back with evidence. You inspect the answers, supporting quotations, and visible gaps. That review is a chance to refine the questions before deciding how to run the continuing mandate.
Research does not authorize contact. If outreach is included later, your team approves the messaging and each target before contact. Existing relationships and exclusion lists belong in that discussion. There is no need to decide on outreach in the first email.
