Buy-and-build / Research hypothesis

Recurring maintenance contracts

Test whether repeat service is supported by identifiable obligations, customer behaviour and delivery capacity, rather than treating every maintenance offering or subscription label as durable contracted revenue.

The pattern

The pattern under investigation is a business that returns to service an installed asset, site or system over time. A maintenance plan may create an ongoing customer relationship and a schedule of work, but the commercial substance depends on contract terms, renewal behaviour, scope and service costs. A public plan description can establish that the product is offered. It cannot establish how many customers buy it or whether those customers renew.

Distinguish scheduled work, contractual minimums, optional call-outs and ordinary repeat purchases. Each creates a different research question. A monitoring subscription with a cancellation right is different from a committed inspection programme, and either can require expensive response capacity. The thesis needs evidence that obligations, pricing and delivery resources fit together. Repeated invoices alone would not explain whether the relationship can survive an ownership change or a different service team.

Where to investigate it

These playbooks provide operating contexts in which to test the mechanism. Sector membership alone does not establish a match.

Hypotheses to test

  • The maintenance relationship has a defined scope and renewal process. The team can distinguish an ongoing customer obligation from a promise to make services available when requested.
  • Delivery requirements are understood, including emergency coverage and included materials. A recurring invoice should not hide open-ended service commitments that make customer economics difficult to assess.
  • Relationships can continue through a change in ownership and service organisation. Any consent, cancellation or assignment provisions need direct contract review rather than assumptions from website language.

Public evidence that supports further investigation

  • Published plan pages describe service frequency, covered assets and what is included or excluded. These give the research team specific contract questions instead of an undifferentiated recurring-revenue label.
  • Public customer procurement notices or service announcements identify ongoing maintenance scope. Check dates and counterparties; a historical award does not establish a current or renewed relationship.
  • Support pages explain scheduling, escalation or monitoring arrangements. They can support a delivery-capability hypothesis while leaving staffing levels and actual response performance unverified.

Evidence that could kill the hypothesis

  • The supposed maintenance product is described only as separately priced, discretionary repair work. That contradicts a thesis requiring contractual service commitments, even if customers sometimes return.
  • Current published terms exclude the asset types, customer segment or service territory required by the mandate. Broad subscription branding cannot overcome a specific scope mismatch.
  • The business publicly states that the relevant programme has ended or transferred to another operator. An archived offer should not support a present-day recurring-service screen.

Common failure modes to examine

  • Integration changes response times or familiar technicians and prompts customer departures. Contracted billing is not a guarantee that service relationships tolerate operational disruption.
  • Customer concentration creates dependence on a few maintenance agreements. Renewal dates, tender exposure and cancellation provisions belong in diligence alongside reported revenue mix.
  • Included call-outs, old equipment or underpriced legacy contracts consume more labour than expected. A standard price list cannot establish the economics of the installed customer base.

Typed screening questions

QuestionAnswer typeWhy it matters
Is an ongoing maintenance programme explicitly offered?Yes / No / UnknownRequire a current description of the programme before classifying the offering.
Which assets or systems does the plan cover?List / UnknownCheck that the installed base matches the services contemplated by the mandate.
Is a visit or monitoring frequency published?Category / UnknownSeparate scheduled obligations from discretionary access to future service calls.
Are emergency call-outs included or separately charged?Category / UnknownExpose potential delivery obligations without estimating their financial effect.
Are renewal or cancellation terms publicly available?Yes / No / UnknownAcknowledge where contract review is needed before evaluating relationship durability.
Does the business perform the maintenance itself?Yes / No / UnknownA reseller arrangement may involve different continuity and margin questions.
Define accepted categories and evidence requirements before research. Unknown is an explicit answer, not a negative finding.

What changes in origination

Search for the maintenance product and its service scope, then verify the operator behind it. Keep offered plans, evidenced customer relationships and diligence-confirmed contract mix as separate fields. Do not estimate a recurring revenue percentage from the proportion of a website devoted to maintenance or from the number of plans advertised.

Use initial conversations to establish what documentation could test renewal, service burden and concentration. Outreach can ask about the programme without implying that it is transferable or profitable. A qualified list records which parts of the recurrence hypothesis remain unanswered.

Apply it to a target list

Turn the hypothesis into client-specific screening questions, with accepted answers and an evidence requirement for each. Triage resolves identity before research is paid for, removes duplicates and wrong-site records, and asks disqualifying questions first. Scout collects typed values from a fixed list, each quoting a retained page verbatim. Audit re-reads with every fetch tool denied, settles contradictions, strikes unquotable findings and leaves gaps visibly open. Review the evidence standards before interpreting a shortlist.

Bring a list or ask Docket to build one. Use the self-serve platform or a managed engagementwith a dedicated analyst and weekly criteria review. Each client's docket is a separate database; the client owns its data and can export CSV or Excel at any time. Outreach is optional: approve the messaging and each target before email, LinkedIn or phone contact. The first ten targets are researched free.

Where to check this

The thesis rests on contract terms: duration, renewal mechanics, assignment rights and price escalators. Where recurring work is code-driven, such as sprinkler or alarm inspection, the governing standard sets the visit cadence and is a public document. Revenue recognition for multi-period service contracts is an accounting question to hand to a quality-of-earnings review.
